[Light the candles, the cover your eyes and recite the blessing. Traditionally the woman of the home lights the candles and as she says the blessing she waves her hands over the candles as if bringing the light to her.]

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּֽנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת.

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav, v’tzivanu l’hadlik neir shel shabat.

“Blessed are You, HaShem, our God, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of the Sabbath.”

Y’hi ratzon l’fanecha, Adonai elohai veilohai avotai, shet’chonein oti v’et ishi, v’et banai, v’et b’notai, v’et avi, v’et imi v’et ko k’rovai, v’titen lanu ul’chol yisra-eil chayim tovim va-aruchim, v’tizk’reinu b’zichron tovah uv’rachah, v’tifk’deinu bifkudat y’shuah v’rachamim, ut’var’cheinu b’rachot g’dolot, v’tashlim bateinu, v’tashkein sh’chinat’cha beineinu. V’zakeini l’gadeil banim uv’nei vanim chachamim un’vonim, ohavei Adonai, yirei elohim, anshei emet, zera kodesh, b’Adonai d’veikim, um’irim et ha-olam batorah uv’ma-asim tovim, uv’chol m’lechet avodat haborei. “May it be Your will HaShem, my God and the God of my forefathers, that You show favor to me [my husband, my sons, my daughters, my father, my mother] and all my relatives; and that You grant us and all Israel a good long life; that You remember us with a beneficent memory and blessing; that You consider us with a consideration of salvation and compassion; that You bless us with great blessings; that You make our households complete; that You cause Your presence to dwell among us. Privilege me to raise children and grandchildren who are wise and understanding, who love God and fear God, people of truth, holy offspring, attached to God, who illuminate the world with Torah and good deeds and with every labor in the service of the Creator. Please, hear my supplication at this time, in the merit of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, our mothers, and cause our light to illuminate that it be not extinguished forever, and let Your countenance shine so that we are saved. Amen.”

A Family Prayer

We thank You, HaShem, for enabling us to welcome this Shabbat day together.

We are grateful for the happiness of our home and for our caring and loving family.

We are thankful for the blessings of the past week:

For life and health, for laughter and friendship;

For the opportunity to work, to learn, and to grow.

Where these have been lacking, may the coming week be better.

We pray that the peacefulness of Shabbat will refresh and inspire us so that the week ahead will be one of blessing and accomplishment for each of us.

Eternity Utters a Day by Abraham Joshua Heschel

On Shabbat we share the holiness at the heart of time. Eternity utters a day.

We celebrate Creation; we celebrate the sacredness of time.

We sanctify Shabbat with all our senses; body and soul partake of Shabbat.

Struggle and dissonance are forgotten; we are embraced by peace and wholeness.

Eternity utters a day. Shabbat is a temple in time.

Shabbat is holiness in time, the presence of eternity, a moment of majesty, the radiance of joy.

We are reminded of our royalty, raised to nobility by our exalted Sovereign.

Shabbat ennobles, enhances, it nourishes the seed of eternity planted in our soul.

Shabbat is a gift of dignity and rest, of holiness, splendor, and delight.

Eternity utters a day. We bask in the radiance of redemption.

Shabbat is a taste of the Olam Haba (World to Come), a time of peace, tranquility, harmony, and joy.

In a time to come the promise of paradise will be restored, a messianic covenant of peace to bind all creatures.

We are grateful for the gift of this Shabbat as we anticipate the time when all will be Shabbat.

A Shabbat Meditation

Dear HaShem, help us on this Shabbat to still the sound of our own striving, so we can hear more clearly the music of Your presence. Teach us that this divine moment of tranquility can bring us harmony and a melody to uplift our soul and renew our spirit. Bless our Shabbat rest, so that by seeking and serving You, by immersing ourselves in the timeless rhythm of Your holy day, we can better fulfill in the coming week the purpose for which You gave us life. Amen.

{The Kabbalat Shabbat begins with six psalms [95-99, 29], whose common theme is that God is Master of the universe. Indeed the Sabbath is the testimony that He created heaven and earth in six days and rested on the Sabbath.}

Come, let us sing joyously to the Lord, raise a shout for our rock and deliverer;²let us come into His presence with praise; let us raise a shout for Him in song! ³For the Lord is a great God, the great king of all divine beings. ⁴In His hand are the depths of the earth; the peaks of the mountains are His. ⁵His is the sea, He made it; and the land, which His hands fashioned. ⁶Come, let us bow down and kneel, bend the knee before the Lord our maker, ⁷for He is our God, and we are the people He tends, the flock in His care. Psalm 97

The Lord is king! Let the earth exult, the many islands rejoice! ²Dense clouds are around Him,

righteousness and justice are the base of His throne. ³Fire is His vanguard, burning His foes on every side. ⁴His lightnings light up the world; the earth is convulsed at the sight; ⁵mountains melt like wax at the Lord’s presence, at the presence of the Lord of all the earth. ⁶The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples see His glory. ⁷All who worship images, who vaunt their idols, are dismayed; all divine beings bow down to Him. ⁸Zion, hearing it, rejoices, the towns^a of Judah exult, because of Your judgments, HaShem. ⁹For You, Lord, are supreme over all the earth; You are exalted high above all divine beings. ¹⁰O you who love the Lord, hate evil! Psalm 98

A psalm. Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has worked wonders; His right hand, His holy arm, has won Him victory. ²The Lord has manifested His victory, has displayed His triumph in the sight of the nations. ³He was mindful of His steadfast love and faithfulness toward the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth beheld the victory of our God. ⁴Raise a shout to the Lord, all the earth, break into joyous songs of praise! ⁵Sing praise to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song. ⁶With trumpets and the blast of the horn raise a shout before the Lord, the king. ⁷Let the sea and all within it thunder, the world and its inhabitants; ⁸let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains sing joyously together ⁹at the presence of the Lord, for He is coming to rule the earth; He will rule the world justly, and its peoples with equity.

Psalm 99

²Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name; bow down to the Lord, majestic in holiness.

³The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over the mighty waters. ⁴The voice of the Lord is power; the voice of the Lord is majesty; ⁵the voice of the Lord breaks cedars; the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon. ^6a-He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,^-aSirion, like a young wild ox. ⁷The voice of the Lord kindles flames of fire;

We beg You! With the strength of Your right hand’s greatness, untie the bundled sins. Accept the prayer of Your nation; strengthen us, purify us, O Awesome One. Please O Strong One–those who foster Your Oneness, guard them like the pupil of an eye. Bless them, purify them, show them pity, may Your righteousness always recompense them. Powerful Holy One, with Your abundant goodness guide Your congregation. One and only Exalted One, turn to Your nation which proclaims Your holiness.
