Yamim Noraim

We are now in the Days of Awe.  Between now and Yom Kippur our actions may change the decrees from shamayim(heaven). Teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah (The Three T’s) are three ways you can enhance this time of introspection.  Teshuvah we have been talking about for the last 30 days, this is returning to HaShem.  Tefillah is prayer and tzedakah is charity.  If we could humble ourselves during this time, we could become closer to our Creator. Tradition teaches that on Rosh HaShanah the Book of Life and the Book of Death are opened.  The names of the righteous are written in the Book of Life, and the names of the wicked are written in the other book.  The “tweeners” as I like to call them, are neither righteous or wicked, but have the opportunity to choose during this time for their outcome for the upcoming year. The Books are “closed” on Yom Kippur, and the decrees are begun on Hoshannah Rabbah. If you are not sure where your name might be, the Three T’s would be a great place to start.  May you be inscribed for a good year!

Formula for the Cleansing of Sins

Rebbe Nachman uncovered a formula for the cleansing of sins.  Read the following list of Tehillim (Psalms), in order, in Hebrew if possible, but if not your own language:

Tehillim 16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, 159

When finished read Tehillim 91 as well.

What do you think?

During this time of Teshuvah, and the Amazing timing of all the distractions of attacks, violence, storms, financial collapse, will we stop, take a breath and see what is behind all of this?  It may be that it is HaShem, shaking the ground as He did everyday in Sodom, yearning for her to repent.  Maybe in that moment of thought you can reflect upon some of these questions:

The King is in the Field

Adapted from the teachings of Rabbi Schneerson

In Likkutei Torah, the parable is further used to explain the difference between the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in the month of Elul, and the revelation of these attributes on Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur, the king is in his palace; HaShem reveals Himself in all His majesty. During Elul, however, the King is in the Field; HaShem reveals Himself at a level which can be apprehended by man within the framework of his mundane reality.
